Both parties share one important plank in their platforms: neither Democrats nor Republicans are all that serious about reducing the deficit.

Talking about the Constitution, Free Enterprise, Free Markets, Capitalism, Individual Liberty and secure borders gets branded you a right wing extremist and possibly a racist, too. So, naturally, politicians looking for cool points from the news media get together "in the spirit of bipartisanship" and bend over the American people, whether it's on the economy or national security. They're only serious about one thing, looking busy and appearing productive. Not actually solving problems.
